Instagram comment-to-DM: a practical guide

Whatsuite team · 21 اکتوبر، 2026 · 3 منٹ کی ریڈنگ

You have probably seen it: a reel says "Comment GUIDE and I will send it to you", and seconds later a DM arrives with the link. That is comment-to-DM. Done well, it turns public interest into a private conversation you can actually follow up.

How it works

  1. You choose a post or reel and a keyword, such as "PRICE" or "GUIDE".
  2. Someone comments with that keyword.
  3. Your automation sends them a private reply in their Instagram DMs.
  4. From there, a bot or a person continues the conversation.

You can also reply publicly to the comment, for example "Sent you a DM", so others see that it works.

What Instagram allows

Instagram's messaging rules apply to automations too. Key points:

  • One private reply per comment. You can send a single private reply to a comment, and it must be sent within seven days of the comment.
  • The 24-hour window. Once the person replies to your DM, a standard 24-hour messaging window opens, and each new message from them resets it.
  • Human agent replies. Outside the 24 hours, a person on your team can still reply for a limited time using the human agent option. Automated messages cannot.
  • No spam. Instagram can restrict accounts that send unwanted messages.

Your automation tool should handle these rules for you, but it helps to know them when planning.

Pick keywords people will actually type

  • Short, single words: GUIDE, PRICE, LINK, MENU.
  • Easy to spell on a phone.
  • Unlikely to appear by accident in normal comments.
  • One keyword per post keeps reporting clean.

Say the keyword clearly in the caption and on screen in the reel.

Write a DM that delivers

The first DM should deliver what you promised, straight away.

Hi Leah, here is the guide you asked for: [link]. Want me to send you the matching checklist too?

Then offer one next step with buttons. Do not ask for an email address before you deliver the thing they asked for.

Move the conversation to WhatsApp

Instagram DMs are great for discovery. For order updates, reminders and repeat offers, WhatsApp is often better. A short bot can ask:

Want updates about this on WhatsApp instead? Tap below to share your number.

With consent recorded, you can follow up on WhatsApp later, and both conversations appear on one customer profile in Whatsuite.

Avoid the common traps

  • Too many keywords on one post. Confusing for people and for reporting.
  • Delivering a sales pitch instead of the promised item. People notice, and they stop commenting next time.
  • Follow-up spam. One helpful follow-up is fine. Five is not.
  • No human backup. Some replies will be questions the bot cannot answer. Route them to the inbox.

Measure it

Track comments with the keyword, DMs sent, link clicks, replies and leads captured to WhatsApp. Compare posts to see which hooks and keywords work, and reuse the best ones.
